COUNTY FAIR FUN – Six of the Braatz children participated in 4-H competitions at the Le Sueur County Fair. Jonny won Grand Championships in Market Lamb and Interview. Abby won Grand Championships in Senior Lamb Lead and Interview. These kids know their sheep!

In the photos, Jonny shows off one of his Grand Championship ribbons and plaques, Andy and Sam pose in front of the barn quilt sign they helped make, Josh readies his sheep for the sheep show, and Ellie and Abby pose with Crystal, the lamb they showed during the Lamb Lead competition.

Tomatoes – You will receive either the round slicing variety of tomatoes, Roma tomatoes, or heirloom tomatoes in your box this week. Romas are oval shaped with much denser flesh, which make them most suitable for sauces and stews (though they are still delicious eaten fresh). Heirlooms have an odd, bumpy shape, dark red/green or dusky red color, and a real kick-in-the-pants old-fashioned tomato taste. Do you need to purchase bulk tomatoes for canning tomato sauce, salsa or soup? Scroll down to see the links for ordering bulk tomatoes.
Summer Squash and/or Zucchini – There are so many ways to use these versatile fruits of the garden! Sautéed with onions as a side dish?  Shredded and baked in brownies or bread? As “boats” for sausage and veggie baked dinner?  Shredded and frozen for your winter baking? Seeded and chunked for your veggie tray?  Share your favorite zucchini and summer squash recipes by emailing us at [email protected].
Cabbage – Make coleslaw, cabbage rolls or boil and butter your cabbage for a tasty side dish.
Anaheim Peppers – Anaheim peppers are quite mild. In fact, mild enough that many people enjoy eating them raw! They rank from 500 to 1,000 SHU on the Scoville Scale. For reference, bell peppers are at zero, while jalapenos can be as hot at 8,000 SHU.
Cucumbers – Cucumbers are such a fresh tasting complement to your salads or relish tray! Make a cucumber salad with vinegar and sugar, or put cucumber slices into your sandwiches for a tasty crunch! Scroll down to see Grandma Harriet’s Cucumber Salad. Delicious family favorite!

COMING SOON – Maybe next week! – Melons, Collard Greens, Rainbow Chard or Kale
Cantaloupe, Watermelon or Honeydew Melon – Enjoy sweet delicious melon sliced or in a smoothie. Yum!
Collard Greens – Collards are have large green leaves and tough stems which are removed before eating.  The leafy parts that we eat are called “collard greens.” They’re closely related to cabbage, kale, and mustard greens and are prepared in similar ways. Check this link for a beginner collard green recipe!
Rainbow Chard – Rainbow Chard is great to sauté or stir-fry. For the evenest cooking, remove the colored ribs/stems from the leaves, then chop the stems and start cooking them before you add the leaves. Chard can also be eaten raw in salads. If eaten raw, complement it’s earthy flavor with apples, raisins or dried cranberries.
Kale – Kale is a powerhouse of nutrients. Cooked kale offers more iron per ounce than beef. Enjoy kale in salads, smoothies or make kale chips.
Surprises! – Depending on weather conditions and what’s ripe and ready, you may receive some surprises in your box this week!

NOTE: We make every effort to pack into your box the items listed in this email. However, as farming is dependent on weather and growing conditions, we sometimes get surprises and pass them on to you. This list is our best guesstimate. You may not receive every item listed AND you may receive some surprises that were not listed. Please be assured we have packed into your box the value you’ve paid even if the items don’t exactly match the items listed in this email. COUNTY FAIR TIME FOR YOUR MINNESOTA FARMERS – Several of your Minnesota Farmers are participating in the Le Sueur County Fair next week. Sam, Andy, Joshua, Jonathan and Ellie will show sheep, and Abby will show her market rabbits. Jonathan is also showing rabbits and a pig, and Jonathan and Ellie are participating in the lamb lead competition. Though your farmers missed last year’s fair due to Covid, they are excited to compete in the livestock shows and 4-H ribbon auction. Come see us at the fair! The Le Sueur County Fair runs Aug. 19-22 at the fairgrounds in Le Center. If you’d like to visit the fair, click here for more information.

The Braatz kids and other members of their Shining Frontiers 4-H group created a barn quilt sign representing sheep that will hang on the Sheep Barn at the Le Sueur County Fairgrounds in Le Center.

Canning Tomatoes Available Soon!
My Minnesota Farmer subscribers can order bushels of tomatoes for canning salsa, tomato sauce, tomato soup, etc. Visit our store to purchase your canning tomatoes for delivery to your dropsite in the coming weeks!

Does this look like Zucchini to you? If you are beginning to feel overwhelmed with the amount of Summer Squash and Zucchini you’ve been receiving in your boxes, here’s another idea for using these versatile squashes! Chocolate Zucchini Cupcakes!
REMINDER: Please remember to take home only what is listed next to your name on the drop site checklist. Two weeks ago there was some confusion when the newsletter said you MAY receive bonus eggs, and then, instead of bonus eggs, we put sweet corn in the box. When it is a bonus egg week, bonus eggs will be INSIDE your share box. Eggs outside of the boxes have been pre-ordered and paid for by other subscribers, so if you haven’t purchased an egg share, don’t take those dozens home. 🙂 (Additionally, if you now realize you took home eggs in error, please consider paying for them by clipping $4 underneath the checklist as it was necessary for your farmers to reimburse subscribers for all the eggs that were taken in error. Thank you!)

 FARM NEWS

We are halfway through the CSA season, and feel this year has been quite a “rollercoaster” of farming. Due to long-term drought conditions, crops are ripening in a less-than-typical manner, and your share boxes reflect these changes. None-the-less, we are happy to share our unpredictable weekly bounty with you! We have left behind the “salad season,” so now your box won’t be so green anymore. You’ll see a greater variety of produce as the season progresses.

Farmer Dean walks the fields checking on the progress of melons and squash. Below, pumpkins, melons and cherry tomatoes are growing despite the drought conditions.
